Just got off the phone with the front desk at the shelter, and Ms. Maya has already "gone home," as of today. She wasn't even listed on their Animals Needing Homes page long enough for her photo to be ready.
So, yesterday afternoon, SchmoopTeen2 & I finally bundled Ms. Maya up and took her back to the Humane Society. Since no kittens are forthcoming, she's due to be spayed, pre-adoption. Once she's got her stitches out, though, she will have NO trouble at all being placed with a good home & family, especially with the "personality profile" I was able to fill out for her. (I believe I used three instances of the word "very" when it came to affection, friendliness, & outgoing nature.)
Meanwhile, MVHS has no kittens or pregnant queens at the moment... but spring is on its way, if that groundhog is to be believed... and with it, Kitten Season. I'll keep ya'll posted. Cheers!
OK, first off, I made Maya her own avatar with that Portrait Illustration Maker tool all the Voxen seem to be using this week. Yes, I am a total internets nerd. But so are you, so nyahh. ;)
I called the Humane Society today, chatted with the fostering coordinator, ran through the timeline, did a little quick math... and she agreed that Maya probably isn't pregnant. Kittens would've most likely arrived mid-January, and here it is February 6th.
[collective sigh]
On the plus side, Maya's all healthy & happy now. She is a bushel & a peck of luvs, too. She adores laps, naps, exploring, playing, children, toys, and even other cats (although the flipside of that coin, of course, is that those other cats must be able to at least tolerate newcomers). Anyway, this means she'll be eminently adoptable into a good Forever Home.
We'll probably keep her here for another week or so. Y'know, just to be sure. But if anybody knows someone in the Twin Cities, MN area who needs a sweet little grey-tabbie girl kitty, I know where to find one.
This is the basic 1024 x 768 wallpaper. You have to click on it once to get to the Vox photo page, then click one more time on the photo to get it to show full-size. It's possible you may have to click on it a THIRD time, if your web browser automatically scales images down to fit in the window. Then, right-click on the photo, and choose "Set as desktop background..." and from there you should be able to run on your own.
I also made two other sizes of this image for higher screen resolutions:
- 1280 x 1024 here (fullscreen)
- 1280 x 768 here (widescreen)
Finally, here's some pix of Maya hanging out on some hot hardware (WARNING -- HIDEOUS COLORS)...
'Mornin, Peeps!
It looks like Vox has upped their game. This little video clip looks so much better than the last one I uploaded of Maya. It's no grainier than the source file, which isn't exactly hi-def to begin with, but there's no "mosaic effect".

Speaking of that last video post... here's my thinking. I shot that clip just a day after I brought her home to the Catcave, and that was December 5th. This kitty, who I'm certain had been living outdoors & hunting birds, and who had already had one litter of kittens, wasn't in the best of health & was thought to be pregnant again. It's now January 20th. Maya is now the picture of vitality & affection... but I've looked, and I'm not finding any new kittens anywhere. Not a hint.
The normal gestation period for domestic cats is normally just over two months, and obviously she's not been here that long. OK, she's not what I'd call skinny around the middle; she's definitely got a firm and convex midsection. But I remember when Spot was pregnant, and she was a little black pear. And man oh MAN is she energetic when we play catch (because it's never "fetch" y'know). She flips. She rolls. She ricochets.
So what do you think? Are the pregnancy allegations only so much hot air, or am I just way #&@%ing impatient???
...but man oh MAN is Maya happy to see us. I mean, so are Spot and Bounce, sure, but mama Maya's just dumped a fleecey barrel of SQUEE over us. Nope, not a barrel: a seafaring TANKER of squee. Mrrrrew!
Well well, it's only a day later, which is a total of three antibiotic pills (if you count the one I just gave her) and already she's improved. Not cured, of course, but she does sound noticeably less congested.
Go mama Maya, go mama Maya. Now please to be quitting with the spewing of cat snot all over my nice shiny computer things. Echgccccgh.
[spray spray spray]
[wipe wipe wipe]
Maya's been really congested & sneezy the past couple of days; I talked to the shelter & they've given me some antibiotics to give her. Most hopefully this'll clear her right up; it's heartbreaking to hear her wheezing through all the purrs. (And it's really gross when she sneezes... spi-toooo everywhere)
If she doesn't pill easily, I know this trick that involves a soft kitty treat. And if THAT doesn't work, there's always the mortar-and-pestle-and-gooshyfood method. But I suspect she'll be fine.
UPDATE -- no trouble at all with the Clavamox pillage.
Risotto is gooooood.
NOTE FROM THEO -- I had a bowl of it for my brunch by the computer, just now, and had to keep dodging her insistent curiosity about it, constantly, until I finished it. Gerroff!! So once the rice was all gone, I put the bowl (with all its tasty lickins) on the floor next to Maya's food dish. Schlurp schlurrrrp ohhh yummm nawmm schlorrp. I think the dish probably SPARKLES now.
