I've just been reading an article about "Cat-Proofing Your Home" on CBSNews.com, which linked to HSUS, so I thought I'd repost this very fundamental & useful resource here, for all of you pet-friendly folks. Do check it out.
Cheers!
We won't be doing any more fostering*, as much as that sucks, and here's why:
- Every single cat we've ever taken in has gotten sick. All of them.
- We're not vets, vet techs, or anything even remotely medical.
- We're not at home for 9+ hours of every day (except some weekends) so even if we were able & qualified to nurse these sick animals ourselves, we just aren't available.
- Some got better, some did not.
Isis developed severe URI; we had to return her to the shelter. They were able to put her in a foster home where somebody was present all day. (The resident creatures are all fine; no worries there.)
*if either of us--that is, me or my wife--are able to transition into a career where we can do the bulk of our work from home, then it's possible we could consider fostering again. Right now, though, this isn't the reality of things.
Wanted to get a macro shot with no flash... and of course that's like the holy grail of cat photography, because they need to stay PERFECTLY STILL for a second or two. Isis gets all happy & friendly anytime you come visit her, you know, head-bonk, leg-rub, mew mew. I did manage to get this while she was eating, though:
Also, here's a bonus from the previous set, dunno how I missed it...While the CatCave is having quiet time (or rather, providing time-out space for Rikki the most sweet yet most troublesome), I'd like to offer greetings and kudos to A Thinker, Cute Overload regular commentator and Plousiac blogger, who has a brand new foster kitty:
...OK, that title doesn't really work, if you happen to know cats. But, today's the day I'm planning to take Abby back to the shelter for adoption. It's pretty clear she's not pregnant, and as much as we do like her, there's no need for her to hang around pretending to nest.
And she is an eminently adoptable kitty. Relentlessly cuddly, good-natured, playful, recently kitty-door trained (!) and easygoing around other cats. Taken together, this is a pretty a rare combination of Take Me Home traits. If we didn't already have three permanent cats (including the Furricane, who does not do well around Christmas trees) and a rabbit for good measure, Abby would be staying with us. That's a pretty big IF these days, though.
Two video clips below...
She's back in the CatCave! No additional photos just yet (I have no free hands right now anyway, she's all squirmy in my lap and just typing is enough of a trick) but we'll post some very soon.
SUCH a happy kitty she is. Oh, I almost forgot! I'll leave you with this thought: She's come back for further fostering because the vet thinks she might be...
Here's hoping you find the best of cat people and forever homes, Abby.
