Whoo... OK. Here's where Bou's at.
Photos and video will come later. Right now, I'm stuck late at work, and Teh Schmoop is at home (with her friend CraftyRedhead) tending to Bou and the NEW KITTENS. So far, there are six. And yes, I've heard there is at least one "mermelade" bebeh.
Bou isn't 100% healthy, though. She had developed a pretty severe kitty cold (upper respiratory infection, or URI) by the time we left for work this morning, to the point where she was mouth-breathing. Jaye picked up some amoxicillin from MVHS for her, along with some electrolyte solution for re-hydration... but of course when she got home, NEW KITTENS had started showing up. And, the kicker, Mama Bou wasn't paying them any attention, so Jaye was a bit frantic there for a while.
At this point, though, after a call to the 24-hour emergency vet and some deft feline midwifery, the NEW KITTENS all seem to be relatively OK. And while mama's not yet tending them solicitously, she's not rejecting them, either. Some are nursing, so that's a relief. Schmoop and CR are still there & on task, too. (I'll be bringing human food soon, ladies!)
Updates and multimedia to follow. But for now, and before I forget, peeps, we've got NEW KITTENS.
Comments
(and babies, and Schmoops, and CraftyRedhead, and Teho!)
BOU YAH!!!
Congratulations to all - especially to your sublime feline! Perhaps the new mum isn't feeling too solicitous because of her stuffy nose?
I'm reaching for my checkbook right now.
Wait - do I hear the footsteps of the papparazzi turning from Paris' house and running towards the Cat Cave?
Exactly. And it's more than just stuffy nose... but she's on the road to recovery already.Your mama cats are always more productive and quicker on the draw than I expect.
Six kittens, what was she thinking.
I'm sure she'll be more mama-like when she feels better.
(thanks, Redz)
(checkbook screeches to a halt)
I was going to make it out to MVHS - let me know if I should hold off on that!
Yikes, eight! Now all those seven dwarves, seven wonders of the world, seven seas, etc names will have to be rethought. I wonder what comes in eights, besides hamburger and hot dog buns.
Fingers crossed everything goes well.
Yikes.
You'd better get mamacat back on her little feets fast.
Whoa....8 baby kitties? No wonder she has been acting miserable, that many squirming little ones on top of a URI....I'm amazed she's had the energy to give birth. I hope after that last one is born and she catches a cat nap (pun intended) that she is feeling more like a Momma cat and tends to her babies.
I hope the babies don't need to be bottle fed. wowzerz...8 bottle fed baby kitties.
Crazy Eights?
If I may humbly suggest as a source for names:
Once had a kitters named Teiwaz. (warrior)

Just a thought.
Congrats to the fam, hope mama gets well soon & babies are all ok.
BOU YAH!!!
Hee hee!!
Congratulations to Bou and to you all at the Cat Cave- I hope they're all healthy and that mama feels better soon!
Bou Yah.! from me too.
Eight I got a couple of choices (Eight is enough sitcom) snow white and the seven dwarfs.
Character names from Dune too.
Anyway good job JAye and Crafty Redhead and momma bou too and I hope she is back on her paws soon
EIGHT? And poor MammaBou is under the weather besides? Give her and the bebehs gentle snorgles for me... 10 dollars (starving student here) going to MVHS as soon as it's organized.
My goodness.... 8 little ones... I'm all agog and stuff. My best friend's hubbie had said at least six and probably today, but he wasn't in on the betting....
Man I was WAYYYY off, by um...counting fingers, shoot i was way off.
But I still betcha the mermelade is a girl... (crossing fingers)
Eight new widdo bebehs!! How exciting! I add my positive vibes to the quick recovery of Momcat & the vigorous and healthy nursing of the bebehs. Bottle feeding? Dang.... that would be craziness!
While we (not so) patiently await still photography, video & audio, can we at least get a brief description of the bebehs? Coloring, et cetera et cetera? Then we can at least imagine them more vividly. Thank you verry much. (If I lived closer I'd TOTALLY come over and help out). *sigh* ;-)
Three white, three black, one teeny tiny tiger tabby.
The excitement--or at least the worry--really started this morning, when I noticed that Bou was mouth-breathing because she was too congested to breathe through her nose. I consulted our vet and the Humane Society, and consensus was that Bou needed antibiotics and some help getting hydrated. So MVHS put together a care package, and I raced home to dose her with medicine and the cat equivalent of Ensure.
Except the dosing couldn't happen right then, as it turned out, because I got home to find a distressed Bou in the office closet and two newborn kittens lying far away from her on the floor where she'd dropped them. Poor little things, no bigger than mice! I was sure they were dead, but when I picked them up they were moving and breathing, albeit cold and damp. Bou had apparently managed to help them out of their birth sacs, but then she'd just left them, not even licked off.
I scooped up the little guys, and there followed a few incoherent moments where I had no idea what to do first. My brain sort of short-circuited. I think I ended up simultaneously calling Theo and drying the kittens off with a towel. He recommended A) warm washcloths in a Ziploc and B) calling the experts. I did both. The experts said to get them warm and cleaned up first, then try to induce them to nurse. OK, that was a plan. But meanwhile, the next kitten was arriving, and Bou seemed even less equipped to cope than with the first two. More cleaning off and warming up.
Around this point I abandoned the warm washcloths, because I had to keep dashing to the bathroom to warm them up again. So instead I dashed upstairs, whipped off my nice work blouse and bra, and put on a cotton sports bra and t-shirt better suited to--well, stuffing poor chilled kittens down my front. I also called my friend CraftyRedhead with a desperate cry for help, as another kitten was arriving and I was running out of hands (and cups). She arrived in time to help deliver the last two kittens, and she was a trooper. We tied & snipped cords, cleaned up blood and other nastiness, and generally ministered to a listless Bou and some very weak and frail kittens.
Seven is a lot. The weakest ones (the white ones) are having trouble nursing, and I'm very much afraid that a couple of them won't make it. :( They're so small and frail, they're having trouble competing with their siblings for the milk. But they're all warm and snug near Mama now, and doing their best to nurse. So I am going to hope for the best and see how everybody is doing in the morning.
Poor Bou. She'd been sick anyway, and she had a tough time of it delivering all those kittens. I kept syringe-feeding her liquids every time there seemed to be a lull in the action. She's barely more than a kitten herself, poor little thing.
So far she's not showing much inclination to mother them. She's accepting them being near her, but she's not licking them or anything. She didn't really try to help them out of their birth sacs; I ended up helping them get out and cutting cords and cleaning them with towels. I think she was just too sick and exhausted for her maternal instincts to kick in. I hope it'll be better once she's had a chance to rest.
Well, I should get some rest too. Think positive thoughts for our tiny kittens. Theo or I will report more in the morning on how they've fared.
I squeezed 8-10 syringes of the kitty electrolyte solution into Bou's mouth, as well as her morning dose of antibiotics and a little water. Also attempted to bottle-feed the tiniest and weakest of the three white kittens, who has been frail from the start and doesn't seem to have the energy this morning to latch onto Bou, at least not in the company of all those wriggling siblings. He felt like a baby bird in my hand. He couldn't seem to take much at all. I'm not optimistic about his chances, poor little guy.
(I use "his" and "guy" generically here, as I don't have a clue about their gender yet, despite having done my best to clean all their tiny bottoms with a cotton ball and warm water. Apparently this is necessary to get them to excrete when they're this tiny, and Bou isn't doing any of the licking/grooming that would stimulate it. It worked, at least on some of them. I kind of lost track of who was who, since there are three black ones and three white ones. I can definitively say that I got the orange one, though!)
The whole little family is in tougher shape than I'd like. But everybody is snuggled up against Bou now, and they're all dozing, Mama included. So it's quiet for the moment, and I'm going to call the vet's office for more advice soon.
-Jaye (Oops! Just noticed this computer is still logged in as Theo. Too tired to care at the moment.)
I'm praying for you guys and the fam.
lots of luv to the cat cave
teho and Jaye - remember however this turns out, its turning out better than it would have if you weren't there to give this care...
All our thoughts will be with the Bou and kittenz today...
You guys are utter and complete SAINTS. Bless you.
Awe...my heart hurts for the teeny tiny weak baby(ies). I'm hoping that Bou will get to feeling better after the medicine has a chance to work. Then she will set out to be the best Momma kitty ~ever~.
I'll come bottle/syringe feed*---allergies be darned! A couple of newborn kitties can't bother me that much!?!
*Unfortunately work and a migraine are keeping me housebound.
(Having nursed a few kitty respiratory infections in my day, I do strongly suggest a tub of Vicks Vaporub or Mentholatum. Put it right under her nose and give her a good whiff every once in a while and it will do just what it does for humans--clear the sinuses and ease the pressure in her head.)
Oh Teho and Jaye, how scary. Much love and purrs from Yitzy and me. Prayers going up for poor Bou's swift recovery and for the bebehs. Thanks you guys for the love you give kitters and for taking the time to share their story with us. May Bou and her babies find strength.
Hugs to Jaye, Teho and CraftyRedhead. Wish I was closer to offer help in purrson.
Teho and Jaye, troopers both of you. The kittnz thank you, I'm sure.
Too nervous to comment. Update when you can. I've named the littlest one, Great White Hope.
My thoughts with you all. hang in there little ones!
wish I was close enough to help... all I can be is be a textual cheer leader for all of y'all.
Humans, Kitties and Mini-kitties alike!
As the first little girl was emerging she was all what the heck. and half way across the room.
She didn't get into what seemed like good delivery mode til the third one.
If she hadn't started basically in my lap (under the covers, 5am) I think she'd have lost the first two.
I'm guessing Bou is a first time mom too.
I suspect that the blocked up sinuses are bad news, as there are probably pheromones like mad going on, and she's missing them and the placentas.
But her mom skills may pick up as she recovers.
If not she doesn't pick up on this as she recovers, does MVHS have any spare mom cats underfoot?
Seriously, I have known mom cats to adopt litters.
A childhood cat did this, and so did my mama cat (three times!).
And would it work to send littlest guy out to full-time foster now?
You guys have your hands full enough with mom and sibs.
As an only foster babe, maybe he'd have a better shot at making it?
Best of luck to the whole fandamblies.
No matter how it goes from here, these little guys, and their mom too, are getting their best shot at making it from all you guys.
Could be just the respiratory infection, but they're going to do a quick x-ray to make sure there's nothing (nobody) still inside, and they're hydrating her and doing the kittencare that she's to sick to manage. So I'm breathing easier for the moment, knowing that they're all in expert hands. Theo will pick them up after work and one of us will post an update tonight (and probably some pics at last, although perhaps not the ones with the newborn kittens in my rack).
That's enough fever to be worrying about anyway, but it sounds as if you're well on top of it.
And, hey, that's what them racks are for.
Jaye - I agree with lauowolf - racks are the purrfect place for sick needy kittens.
Prayers continue. I (and everyone else) will be excited to see pix when you guys can.
Thank heavens for Animal Hospital daycare :-)
To keep babies warm, the heating pad on LOW with 2 towels will do. I bottle fed 3 kittens this way. Cotton balls to rub the rear ends should be damp and warm to get them to pee & poop. No poops for the first day or so. The vet can recommend the KMR mix for kittens. You may need to supplement the runt's feeding. This will get messy with more formula on baby face than in the tummy.
Good luck with lucky number sevens? Any word on Kenya and her gang?
As far as Kenya's crew, no recent news... except that Rikki is mondo kabongo and now regards Mr. Bounce as his big bro. It's hilarious. So Bounce is basically enjoying a second rowdy childhood, and has getting a lot more exercise these days. And Rikki LOOOOOVES his people, too!
I had a long post all written out, but Vox ate it when I had to register.
I've been a (semi) long time lurker, ever since mama Kenya first appeared with her fluffy yet large belly, and watched with much squeeing all the kitty antics of the Kenya Krew.
And I've been watching with tears to hear of Bou and her kittens. Thank you, both of you, for doing what you do. And for letting us into your kitty fostering lives, the good and the bad. Were I anywhere near that part of the country, I would have already been on your doorstep offering 24 hour care for those kits and their mama. Work wouldn't have appreciated it all that much, but.. *shrugs*
Thank y'all for the updates. And my prayers and hopes go out to that family, and to you all, because I know while it'd be heartwrenching to hear if even one didn't make it, it would be a thousand times worse to actually experience it. And I hope y'all won't have to go through that, now.
As are all the warm thoughts from all you commenters. We're hoping right along with you, and we'll keep you all posted.
Jaye, CraftyRedhead, and Teho,
Bless your little pea-picking hearts! Wish I could feel the joy and heartache of all this up close and personal. Sending you all good vibes. Come pay day you'll have a donation (just don't tell the hubby- he's not a furry person lover), as will my local shelters.
This is just the kind of story people need to hear to convince them to spay their kitties -- for the health of a young girl like Bou!
[not referring to Bou's fever]
I KNEW it! I knew the kittens would be out in the 36 hours it would take me to get back to my college from home. So it's seven, eh?
Poor Bou and kitlings. Glad to know she's in good hands though - great job, Jaye! (and Teho)
I'm suffering from a nasty cold myself, so I can sympathise with Bou. Warm thoughts to her and the kitlings.
