CLOSED: The "Buddy Thread" at Cute Overload

Comments

Ok thanks Theo. Here is the rub. Since you closed comments rather abruptly, there are some peeps who are away on vacation who are going to come back and be sad that Buddy has disappeared. Could you please post a comment first that explains what is going on? I was just trying to do that when whammo! No comments for me!
R. Moore has already made a forum we could use, and it would be great if we could have a link to it. We were all about at the place where we had decided something needed to be done. Not everyone there has a Vox, So would it be ok also to put up a link or something to this discussion on the main post? As you can tell, I am a little worried about this- especially for Annie, who is gone because her Mother passed away. She will be sad to come home and find us gone.
Um, Buddy has not disappeared, and I did leave a comment with a link to this post. Nobody will be lost when they get back from wherever they are now.

Is the CuteTalk forum (mentioned above) the one R. Moore made?
Thanks for posting the link. I am just the tiniest bit piqued that you got to be last;)
Out of necessity.
Lol, I could not see your post at first, I think Buddy's weight was crushing the whole internets. I am not sure If cute talk is R. Moores. I think this whole situation is totally hilarious. Hopefully we can get it sorted out quick so you can wash your hands of us!
I'd rather stay somewhere else on CO, so we could pick another post to invade? If we go on another site, I might not be able to post from work. I can't post on Vox from work, I can't even access Teho's blog.
I didn't think of that...But if we invade another post, we will only have this problem later, and make things tricky for Meg and Theo. Could you see another forum? Like what Roger was suggesting?

I'd rather stay somewhere else on CO, so we could pick another post to invade?

This really isn't a good idea. Single posts on Cute Overload will never work well as whole forums unto themselves; what y'all are trying to do is really best served at a site that's designed for discussion. Can you post to that CuteTalk site from work?

I could access it yesterday, but that doesn't mean it won't be blocked in the future. CO has been safe so far.
Let me put this another way: I'm vetoing the idea of co-opting a new CO thread as a "forum". Been there, done that; looking for a permanent solution now. So. Other options?

We'll get something up & running that works for everybody, have no fear.
Looks like you're up Roger! Are you ready to moderate this band of ragtag warriors?
I just registered at RMoore's site & posted a comment there; hopefully we'll get her attention soon...
I don't know how CuteBabyDaddy would feel about me volunteering his skills, but he could maybe fix up something on wordpress- it could be on CuteBabyFix, but it would be a stand alone page that you had to get to from Cute Overload? This would be if Rogers site was not accessible for peeps, of course. I think her forum is the best idea so far.

Yahoo also has a pretty decent groups and message board spot.

Just a thought. If the other ideas don't work out. I'll stop by R's site later too.

:-)

Sigh we all knew it had to end sooner or later.

No Metz, no. This is only the beginning! The glorious beginning of our mad scheme of total world domination! Our humble beginnings with buddy are never to be forgotten. (If you aren't careful Theo, we will just plunk down here. We've been known to do that.)
wow, i had no idea buddy was that popular.

i didn't get a good working idea of Cute Talk (Moore), but maybe if there were a couple more topics (not just posts) it would be easier to understand how it works. I am not wild on the color theme, but as an idea, I think it is a good solution.

what would we have to do to log in? could we log in with type pad or vox accounts or have to create a whole nother thingy?
[arched eyebrow]
I'll be careful.
Yahoo groups wouldn't work for me, they are blocked from work.
Yeah, Yahoo protocols are often blocked by corporate firewalls; even our company does this.
Could you see cutetalk, Helene? Or maybe you don't know, eh? Are you at home today? I assume so, since you are Voxing.
This could be a problem for a lot of peeps because they are at work they can't see us here. How about CuteBaby? Were we blocked?
I'm at home. I see cutetalk and cute baby from work, but I'm worried. What if we settled down there and it's blocked later? Would everyone move again just for my sake?
Or we could just hijack another CO post and play hide and seek with T(Ed.)!!
What does your company usually block? Do they usually block forums? I think a lot of companies prolly do...
Nah- I think it is time for the resistance to come out from the underground. I was resistant to the idea, but I think Theo is right. We are going to continue to have this problem, and bug Meg because were crashing her site. And then we'd crash the whole interwebs, and the feds would come after us.
Honestly, as an IT pro, I think it's unlikely your workplace will ever be block the site itself, unless you do something egregious which calls attention to it. It has to be waaaaay under the radar of most official website filtering.

R. Moore will have to be 100% OK with wearing the Moderator Hat, though. It can be a pain, and I don't know what bandwidth and/or hardware costs might be associated with maintaining it.

Or we could just hijack another CO post and play hide and seek with T(Ed.)!!

You do understand there's no rule that requires me to play fair, right?
[scans IP address list]
Exactly. I think a lot of peeps don't realize that web site owners can see a lot about where their traffic comes from, and can block individuals and so forth. What we do not want to do is be a pain, because I for one am grateful to Meg and Theo for providing us a spot for so long. (Did I grovel real good Theo?) Seriously, I think we can try Roger's site, and if it doesn't work, we can drop back and punt. I am concerned about Annie, Metsakins, and everyone else who has not shown up here as yet. Fred? Roger? Brinnann? Chime in Peeps!

Did I grovel real good Theo?

It'll do. ;)
Why not make a forum as an Official CO-overload site?

There are a few free-forum providers out there that don't reply on huge ad-spammage.

http://www.forumup.org was pretty good last time I looked. (also has a .com site too.. not sure if it's different)

Though the forum I frequented there seems to have died (for some reason, it gets stuck loading the ads... but other sites I visit there don't have that problem. Forumup it's self DOES occasionally go down or some of it's forums, but from what I understand, their tech support isn't bad.

but, anyway, there are probably better options out there, but this is the free one i know about.

as fo rhow to impliment it...

I see several ideas... among all the other forums (OT chatter, user CO-finds, etc) have one specifically for official CO-threads. one thread per picture-set, eeither linking to the origianal CO-post, or reposting it (picture+text), and letting people respond. getting some back and forth linkage--ie, "click here for the CO-Overload post" on the CO post, would promote useage of the forum...

very technically, I"m sure it'd be possible to lock comments on ALL CO posts, and convert entierly to the forums in question. though that might not be desireable. But where to draw the line between the two?

anyway.. my... well, I"m up to 5 cents at least.

also this way we're not lumping a boat load of traffic on some unsusspecting purr-son :D

Why not make a forum as an Official CO-overload site?

Easy answer: Can't. Too much on our plates already.

You mean that you don't devote your lives 24/7 to CO? Awwww why not?

Just kidding I know it t'aint your "day-job".

I'm with kRista too... *Groveling* It's been fun and we've definately overburdened CO with our chit-chat. But it's been great of you guys to let us have at it even if I did come into the game a little late.

So perhaps we can help R. out with moderating too if she doesn't want sole responsibility.

We all seem to be from all over and different time zones, only some of us are on all at the same time so some of us from the different time zones could share in that job based upon availability.

(saying that while not knowing how R's forum works)

Ok I'll hush now and go register at R's site.

Bye!

I am shocked, shocked I say, to hear that Teho doesn't devote 24/7 to maintaining CO and his blog. You keep trying to have a life, don't you? I missed the Buddy Party, but clearly there is an ongoing demand. Now we need a supplier. I dunno enought about IT to have an informed opinion, but - is there any way to make this a paying proposition? (No, not that kind!) For a donation of $x. to MVHS, users could access & post?
Silly. MVHS isn't a blog hosting service.
Cute Baby Daddy here - Cute Baby Fix told me about the tragedy over at CO/Buddy Thread. I know one of the things the peeps on the buddy thread liked was the simple to use, simple to read sequential nature of the Buddy thread. I thought an easy solution would be to just migrate over to Blogger... perhaps something like at http://buddylives.blogspot.com/ which I just threw together in 30 seconds......
No, no. Oh, yer funnin' me. I mean link the ability to post on whatever site/forum to paid-up donors. I'm mercenary at heart.
I doubt that blogger is set up to handle thousands of comments under a single post either. Unless it automatically collapses threads and paginates after a certain # of comments? I know that LiveJournal does that.
Updated parent post with Blogger link.
CBD again.. Finally read all the comments. Theo.... we could have have one heck of a rumble with CO posting ;) I run IT for a school district and have a list of a couple of thousand proxies :P I could keep you logging IPs until your fingers bleed (just kiddin)

Seriously, I do also host a couple of sites so setting up a wordpress or whatever on one of my reseller accounts. Buddylives.com is still available, and we could make it fun. Blogger is probally perfect because it costs nada, is easy enough for the peeps, and can harness the powers of Google which rival that of the Death Star.

Unless it automatically collapses threads and paginates after a certain # of comments? I know that LiveJournal does that.

As it happens, PHP BB does that too, which is what R. Moore's CuteTalk dealie is built in. I dunno if there's any option for a dynamic bookmark that always takes you to the latest, most recent comment, though. I think that would be handy for auto-paginated blog tools.

Is there any way to transfer the history from Buddy's page? Maybe as an extra link to whatever site we end up on?

I could keep you logging IPs until your fingers bleed

I get that you're joking... but I while back, I learned how to ban ranges of IPs using TypePad, to deal with chronic troublemakers using online services that generate IP addresses dynamically. Again: Been there, done that.

(Hasta la vista, "Paris Hilton".)

Okay, I'm gonna quietly back away while you peeps talk IT. Let me know when you figure it out.

And I vote Teho opens Buddy's thread one last time just so Annie can be LAST when she comes back.

That'd be one heck of a copy-and-paste, wouldn't it? But why would you need to, or even want to?
(CBD again) Wordswoman - sorry was typing comment #2 whilst your comment was magically here. Blogger can handle some really long commentaries. I think whoever volunteers to moderate could open a new post for each month or week or something like that. Seeing how it took 4 months of posting on top of the already large commentroversy I think a monthly new post ought to cover them. Blogger also seems to have a bit more horse power than whatever Typepad is running CO on. (Not that I should talk, my current host for cutebabyfix.com is dirt slow). kRista informs me that CO is run on OMG pony power, and it's got like 1000 horsepower under the hood so that's awesome.
I can think of one important distinction between Google and the Death Star, by the way.
OK, two.
Whew I am me again. We would want to because we are crazy cat ladies Theo, and for us this is about the peeps, not really the IT. I vote for Blogger first, and the original buddy peeps can split up moderating it, or we could go for Rogers forum, which is more complicated, second.
Now I'm picturing ponies riding horses. [eyes cross]

HI - i'll go along with whatever... Felt so alone at work...I'm going over to Annie's vox to leave her a message...

Here is my idea- how about from here on out every one votes for what they would like, and we see what the majority thinks. I vote for something easy, like blogger, and I volunteer to help moderate. I am sad peeps, and I second Brinann, Annie should get to go on and be last. I know you won't get why, Theo, trust me.
Wow...we're finally opening our exhibit at work and I get the opportunity to mess around online...and I come back and see all this! I love the CO crowd! Unfortunately, I don't have much to suggest to make this stuff any easier, but if you feel like seeing new Buddy pics, my blog is updated. I expect to update the Budfucious Say series fairly soon.

http://kataboots.typepad.com

Hugs to the Buddy Commenters!

I second Brinann, Annie should get to go on and be last

Well, if she wants, I suppose can copy-and-paste an Annie Comment in there, at the end. I'd need the text first, of course.
UPDATE: I have been able to extract the ENTIRE set of comments, URL links and all, from the Couch Straddler post. It's a simple but long HTML document that I've got in a .ZIP archive, if some enterprising forum mod wants to try & re-load it someplace (ahem R. Moore, CBD).

If you want this archive, send me a Vox private message with the email address you'd like me to send the file attachment to. In its compacted state, it's only about 472 KB.

In its compacted state, it's only about 472 KB.

Well, Yahoo thinks it's more like 623K, but that's still less than 1 MB.
I like the blogger option, it should be accessible from work.
OK! So both the "CuteTalk" forum and the "Buddy Lives" blog have copies of the Couch Straddler Comment Archive, now. AND it's still sitting there (forever) over on Cute Overload, of course.

I really think that's plenty of redundancy in this particular system, given that we're not exactly keeping commercial airliners from running into each other... but y'know, maybe that's just me.
Oi! Look at me and my Vox-goodness.

So now that both have it, is blogger winning out? I'm not going to shut down the forum, but if people are going to be there I'll need to know :)
Russia, we (CBD and I) don't really care, but I do think blogger would be easier. We are so not trying to take it out from underneath you, and whatever is decided, we are going to need each other to take care of moderating because we are all so busy. From what I can tell, Helene and I are thinking Blogger. And I think Metz said forum, and Metsakins said she didn't care. Did I miss anyone? All you other peeps! Vote! Don't say "I don't care", cause then we can't decide. No one's feelings are going to get hurt, let's get this thing moved so we can start talking about real important stuff like Kazi, and gardening, and doin the tuna dance.
The tuna dance and the tomato song.
No hard feelings at all :) I'd be happy to help moderate if need be. Does vox have a poll option so that preferences can be quickly and easily tallied?
I don't care. Sorry, Fixies...
LOL I'm no real help either sorries.
Cowards! Ok, well I am going to be driving to North Carolina in the morning, and will not have interwebs for a couple of days. I just may die of suspense. I'll be waiting with baited breath to see how it turns out. I will be happy to do what the group wants, and I think Russia's idea of a poll is good. How about this? If there is no poll feature, perhaps everyone could private message Theo, he could take an anonymous count, and give us a verdict? And no voting "I don't care" you are all way too nice, and I trust Theo will give us the true count. Sorry dude.
CBF is right. I know LJ has a poll option. Six Apart owns LJ and Vox. Maybe Vox has a poll option. I shall explore and further put off homework!

Hi there!

I can't decide at the moment, but that's because I'm too busy to check out the options! I'll try to look tonight and vote properly, CBF!

ps. Kazi has to go back to the vet this afternoon. :(

Fred

So I can't find anything allowing polls on Vox. BUT Blogger has just started having polls. Do you guys have time to put one up, CBF and CBD? The forum will only allow members to answer polls :P
We are making time;) CBD loves a challenge! We will get a poll up toot sweet, and then no one has ta bother Theo.
Ok peeps, get ready to dangle your chads! The un-official poll is up at: http://buddylives.blogspot.com/ . Vote early, vote often. Vote, Vote like a baby stoat, unless you're a felon 'cause felons can't vote!
LOL Hang Chad!

BTW: TEHO! THANK YOU!

For hosting our dithering over this hot topic.

The choice doesn't much affect me personally, but as a web geek, I will note that you will probably have fewer issues in the long run if you use the tool built for what you're trying to do (i.e., a forum) rather than trying to make a tool intended for another purpose do what you want (i.e., a blog).

Both are good tools. But why hit a nail with a wrench if you've got a hammer handy?
[gzzzzzSNORK]
...wha? Who? I'm awake! What? Hammer??

Ackkkkk I just got home last night... : ( I will try to catch up.

Teho Many many thanks for leaving the message on the buddy post.

I will try to catch up on all the discussions over this weekend.

I missed you all. So glad to be home with my Schmoop.

Oh Nooes.. Crap I am logged in on my other vox. HEy guys its me Annie.

Off to work will catch all of you in a bit.

Annie

I am completely out of the loop ... but whatever works!
Is this thread going for 3000 comments too?
Last.
Denied on all points!
Can't we use the CO chat room on Meebo? Or did you want something that leaves a comment thread?
We'd sorta thought of that too but not everyone who frequented the Buddy post could get into Meebo from work.

Annie -hi!! Glad you're back. We've all been thinking of you!

We do like the comment thread 'cause so many people are in different time zones, also a lot of us (me) don't have the attention span for chat. (And a lot of us can't chat at work and work, but we can throw a comment up every hour or so!)
All I can offer is my very best wishes to the Buddy buddies!
And, on behalf of 'cow orkers' everywhere!
Good luck on this ambitious, honorable effort.
<i>Easy answer: Can't. Too much on our plates already.</i>

I'm pretty sure you could easily get some people to help out. if you already know a portion of the user base, then it's easier.

it'd likely take some start up effort.. but promote up a few administrators and a buncha moderators, and they place ought to about take care of it's self.

I would offer to help with start up and moderation etc--I have a fair bit of experience with moderating and admin-ing forums--but I'm swamped until about mid august--funerals and other fun things.

past that, I'd provide references... but I belive most of my forums that I mod/admin'd for have closed down. just due in part to the natural life span of the internet.

But... well.. if you DO decide to go for something like this... I"ll help if I can. just saying.

gonna read through the rest of the replies now. so forgive me if I doublepost.

I think this sums up my opinion perfectly. :)

I've seen this half mentioned, but not 100%.. why not a LJ community? That would do it nicely also. Con would be that people have to sign up for an LJ account.

I think my thing is... I, personally, would want a place where it's... Cute overload. Not "this one specific post on CO" or, and I'm sorry, "This one specific clique of CO-users"..

the reason I vote for forum, or LJ over a blog...

With a forum, we can open specific discussion threads for posts. Ditto LJ. infact, with both of those, we could help lessen the load on CO's servers.. with a blog.. well.. using a blog for CO-chatter honestly feels kinda like reinventing the wheel. it's already posted on a blog. why blog it again?

I dunno. I guess it doesn't matter to me too much.

I'm not a part of the buddy party.

I'm just another user. and I probably won't participate in whatever's chosen unless I have a hand in moderating or settign it up or something.

Whew.... I am just going to throw in a quick hello again to all and (grins wickedly) Wow Teho what a way to get the lurkers out of hiding ; )

Sooo glad to be home and thanks to everyone for your support.

I suppose, Annie, this means you've read our evil plans for cheerdom?

R.Moore, Nope I have only got to look at little bits of everything. I got home about 9 PM last night and needless to say I was completely exhausted and went right to bed. I have been trying to get causght up at work and also my Co worker(cow orker) is home today with flu so My stuff... her stuff.... its a mess at work today. I plan to catch up on the thread tonight and tomorrow...

And for the record Thanks you guys for thinking about me and I am ashamed to admit when I went to the buddy post this Am and saw the closed comments I started to cry for a second (I know silly but too much loss is hard to take) but Teho added the link to here so I found you, and a little bit ago at work I got a chance to see all the private messages from everyone.

Anyway my lunch is over so gotta get back too it.

Hey, no shame in crying, Annie. I'm glad you found us and can help us decide what to do next!
I agree with Jaye. A forum would be a better idea than Blogger. It's pretty hard to join a discussion that's hundreds or thousands of comments long with no organization--I think a forum setup where people could make separate threads would work better than a blog.
HAY PEEPS! --

So, I think I'm gonna redirect the old OCOOTDOAUE link to R. Moore's CuteTalk forum for now. It's pretty much swept two polls, and it's even a real actual online forum. It's going to be labeled UN-official (of course) but you'll have your quick link to your fansite!

Okey dokes?
By the way, the new link looks like this.

Thanks Theo and Jaye .. I guess even with out checking the poll I was on board too.

Hi everyone whenever you come by, and thanks for the unofficial link Theo.

At Last.
