So did she come with that name, or did you guys name her? Are these Mom cats usually strays or abandoned, or do you get rescue kitties? Does MVHS take in feral rescues and socialize them at the Humane Society? I's just curious.
So what are the due date predictions amongst the family members? The PEOPLE family members... ;-)
Is Boudica the origin of the word bodacious? Just curious. She has a monster belly in those pics. Any takers on a poll? I say, 5 kitters, born on June 29.
can anybody more enlightened explain the [this is good] ?
I think it's just Vox's easy option for quickly adding your virtual thumbs-up to a post. Instant seal of approval. Possibly something behind the scenes automatically tallies the number of [This Is Good] "votes" that a given post has accumulated, and uses that number to help determine what they highlight on the Vox mainpage (though I see they have a "suggest this is good" link too).
can anybody more enlightened explain the [this is good] ?
The "suggest this is good" link is the way to bring to Vox's attention to something you think is good enough for the TIG page. It doesn't matter how many times you check the box in a post, if you don't use the link to bring it to Vox's attention, the post won't make it to the TIG page. Someone has to 'suggest' your post; then they read it and decide if it is worthy of a TIG mention.
That's what I always thought...I noticed a lot of people thought that checking the box alerted the Powers that Be to a TIG but I never thought so. Favoriting something is much more likely to get attention because it shows up on the "recently favorited" colum below the [tig] feature.
MC2: We named her, or rather, Theo did. The momcats end up at the Humane Society for various reasons; some are impounds and strays that don't get claimed, others are surrendered by their owners. All the usual menu of reasons that animals end up at a shelter, I'm sure.
Not sure what you mean by rescue kitties, but I don't think MVHS would consider feral cats adoptable. I doubt they would have the staff and resources for the countless hours required to tame feral cats or rehabilitate vicious/aggressive dogs, much as they might like to.
I don't want to know the details about what happens, frankly, but if they're not good candidates for adoption they never make it to the adoption floor. Which is sad, but with so many homeless animals that *are* adoptable, it's a hard choice that most non-profit shelters are forced to make.
I don't think MVHS would consider feral cats adoptable.
Oh I think that would all depend on the cat... whether it had once been a housecat, for instance, or if it was still a kitten, etc. would affect its behavior around people. I think if it were winter (slow season for kittens) and the shelter had a cat that needed some love & socializing, we might very well be able to handle it. For Maya, we ended up just being a place to convalesce & get healthy again, before adoption; housetraining a feral might be similar.
True, but to me "feral" means genuinely wild, not just a housepet gone stray...e.g. cats who were born wild and grew up untouched by human hands. We had a few of those on the farm, and while the kittens could be tamed if you found 'em early enough, the adults were near impossible to handle without leather gloves (and pretty risky even then).
I'm sure it can be done--I know my dad did it more than once--but it takes a long time and tons of patience.
Naming a kitten was just a suggestion, couldn't we still have a round of betting on number and/or date of arrival and/or time of arrival, even if for the mere knowledge of how amazing our guessing skills are.
Speaking of feral cats, having tried to take in several strays from the streets of Kiev, it takes ages and ages to get them to even eat in your presence. The farthest a wild street cat will go is sleep inside on very cold nights. Our sucess story, Serenkiy ("gray"), started coming into the house independently, sleep with us, and sometimes even play. However, when he switched fully from whatever he found outside to regular dry and wet catfood, he got kidney stones and passed away. It is hard to say whether we made his life a little better or should have stayed out of it alltogether.
I'll wager six kits, but on the full moon, the 30th. June is also Adopt a Shelter Cat Month, according to my Humane Society calendar. Boudica's daughters were not named in any history that I've ever heard of, and she didn't have a son by her first husband, but who's to say she didn't marry again and have more children? Not I.
I adopted my feral kitty (in pic) at about 12 weeks. He was COMPLETELY WILD. It's been a ***very rocky*** experience for the past 2 1/2 years, but he is a sweet boy now, though very skittish and I don't think he'll ever be a lap cat. He's an "only child" and I think it'll stay that way for the foreseeable future, though I salivate over kittens. Good to have the vicarious experience here :-)
I don't think I'll ever get the raise that was supposed to take place in May, so I might be a bit late in paying up. Keep this in mind, T., and don't send your button men after me.
Teho- Make mine five kittens on the first. And $25 in the "kitty."
And Moggyfan?
My Wolfie kitty was a feral kitten rescue. He's going on two now. Not really entirely tame, but wild any more either. Sort-of comes when we call. (Well, if he feels like it.) Very loving to us -- unwilling to tolerate anyone else. The tv is still unaceptable.
But what I wanted to say is that your guy needn't be an only kitty. Wolfie came to us because we needed a buddy for Motley. The folks at our Animal Shelter said the typically ferals really, really like other cats. And we saw it -- the first steps Wolfie made towards settling in with us were made when he met Motley. Suddenly we were alright, because Motley was here. We're maybe better than alright now, in fact, I think he likes us. But he loves Motley.
>> Will the kitterz be getting lovely ancient names as well, and are the SchmoopTeens researching same?<<
The teens are away, camping with their dad for a few days. We haven't talked much about kitten names yet, but I'm sure we will once they actually make an appearance! I can't wait to see what kind of color/pattern mix we get.
I live in fear of a marmelade kitten, for Theo finds them soooooo irresistible. (I almost typed "mermelade," which I imagine to be an orange tiger-striped *aquatic* kitten...)
2lostsouls, Bou is a little under the weather, so it's hard to say what her natural personality is; she's been congested and sneezy, poor thing, which makes her a bit subdued. She loves to have her head rubbed, though, and she likes to sit on desktops and shelves rather than on the floor.
6 kittens on the 29th. Sexes / colors? OY, who could guess? For all the "resident creatures" including Jaye's sake may there not be either a marmie or mermie (heeheehee) kitten in the batch.
Do I send my contribushe to the MVHS?
Re names, may I remind you again :-) that Yitzak (laughter, in Hebrew) is a grrrreat kitter name (espeche for a black & white boy).
Hiya Claudia - I'm only rooting against marmies so that Teho won't be in terrible turmoil wanting yet another beautiful kitten after just adding Wonderful Rikki to the household. :-)

What an excellent job on the closeup, if I had tried something like that I'd have ruined it 8 ways to Sunday.
She is a beauty. Perfect greeter for your page.
"Yes? Did you want something?"

But yeah, we could only take one at a time.

I'm wondering now...

Sheeesh, found me again!
*note to self, disguise name when playing hide & seek*
Shhh, Christine H!
Teho, when you get a chance, please check out the setup awaiting Lucy 3.0. I think we NEED something like this for the cat cave.
